Production Update 11
(June 22, 2006)

It's been over a year since our last production update and we'd like to humbly apologize for the lack of communication. We have been so busy with the production and post-production of the movie for the past year that we've scarcely had time to chime in with our progress. To make up for this neglect, we'd like to catch everyone up to speed, beginning where we left off—April 2005.

After Larry's successful mini-tour of Minnesota with –Itis in April '05, the band decided to get together over the 4th of July to camp out with Larry and the Indiana gang. The venue was Larry's friend Steve's farm, where tents were set up, along with coolers full of beer, a campfire and about a dozen washers sets. Steve also had his barn set up for live music, and the band and Larry entertained friends and family all weekend. At one point during an –Itis set, bassist Mike Glaser, an actual justice of the peace, took the opportunity to renew the wedding vows of Larry and Sandy and a few other couples from Indiana. Of course, given the sensibility of all involved, these were not your standard wedding vows; they involved promises of sexual favors and the like. Believe me, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. We also took the opportunity to screen a best-of cut of the Main Event concert for Larry, the band and the rest of the crew. Everyone seemed to get a kick out of the footage, which brought back memories from that historic performance in Fridley, MN in Jan. 2005. For our part, we were happy with how the concert footage turned out and had a blast editing together our favorite moments. Other highlights from the trip included a lot of irresponsible lighting of fireworks, the largest washers tournament we have ever seen, and a bra burning around the campfire, as mandated by Larry Pierce. But most importantly, -Itis asked Larry to come out to their home base in Colorado Springs, CO later that month to record some songs and play a few gigs with them.

Larry and Sandy agreed and flew out to Colorado a few weeks later to tour with –Itis. We had wrapped principal photography with Larry and the band by then, but by all accounts the trip was a major success. Larry and the band played gigs in Colorado Springs and Denver, and everywhere they went, Larry was greeted with a star's welcome. One fan even painted his bald head to look like Larry Pierce's face. In Denver, Larry was enlisted to help judge a bikini contest. Of course, there was plenty of washers-playing to go around, as the band had made sets of their own and spread the game to their friends in Colorado. And Larry did find time to do some recording with –Itis in the band's in-home studio. Sandy and Larry had never been to Colorado , and they thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the good company. They made a promise to come back just before Christmas for another trip and tour.

In November, we headed back to Las Vegas for one more follow up with Larry's producer, Arnie Hoffman and his wife, Marianne. Things at Laughing Hyena Records were going well. Arnie told us that they had recently branched out into DVDs, since most truckers now had DVD players in their trucks. Though Arnie had no immediate plans to revisit the Las Vegas show or record another Larry Pierce album, his interest was piqued when we told them that Larry had been drawing big crowds in Minnesota and Colorado.

From Vegas, we headed to Santa Monica, California to interview USC professor Ed Cray, who literally wrote the book on dirty music. His book is called "The Erotic Muse" and it is a thorough history and catalog of raunchy music in America. It seems that these types songs have been with us for a long time and, according to Cray, they're not going away any time soon. Mr. Cray was a good resource and a great interview. We think he'll really be able to put Larry's story in a historical context.

A couple of weeks after we got back from the West Coast, Larry and Sandy did indeed head back out to Colorado to visit with –Itis and play some more gigs. This time around, the folks in Colorado knew and loved Larry's music and once again came out in strong numbers to see him play with -Itis. But another plan was brewing to bring Larry to an entirely new venue far from Colorado—to the tropical sands of Jamaica.

That's right. As part of the band's yearly gig at the CocoLaPalm Resort in Negril , Jamaica, Larry and Sandy flew out with –Itis and a few dozen of their fans this April for a week of shows on the beach. Among the many highlights of the trip was an impromptu acoustic jam where Larry and the band invited the crowd to sing along with all of their hits. At one point, Larry spent some time teaching –Itis' lead guitarist Craig the melody for his song, "The Bare Tit Boogie," which they then played to an enthusiastic crowd the next night. Turns out, many of the female concertgoers took the song's suggestion literally and paraded around topless. Larry had come a long way from playing these songs for friends in his garage. Even more notable was the fact that Larry designed and built a special lightweight, collapsible washers set just for the trip. According to the guys, you've never played washers until you've played it on the sands of Jamaica overlooking the Caribbean Sea. And that pretty much brings us up to speed on Larry's latest happenings.

For the past year, we have also been hard at work logging and organizing the 150-plus of hours of footage we've shot for the documentary. This task has been extremely difficult and time-consuming, especially since it's only the two of us working on it, but we have made considerable progress. We have drafted an outline for the movie and plugged in all the pertinent dialogue and scenes from the transcriptions. Now we are further whittling down our footage and putting it in order, essentially drafting an edit of the movie on paper before beginning the physical editing. We are happy to report that we have brought in our friend Matt Ehling, an outstanding filmmaker in his own right, to edit the movie in his home base of Minneapolis. Matt and one of our producers, Bill Kruse, are currently working on editing the entire Main Event concert so we can use the best parts in the final movie. After that, Matt will begin editing a rough cut of the film using our paper edit. Then, finally, we will head to Minneapolis to do the fine-tuning and sound design of the movie in time to submit it to the big film festivals this fall. Yes, we'll have a finished movie by the fall. And yes, documentaries take a long damn time to finish. We are really excited to complete the movie and show everyone the finished product.

By the way, Larry now has a MySpace account.  Stop by and say hi sometime: .
